Eat Smart New York (ESNY)
ESNY provides low-income adults and families with a series of free nutrition lessons. Individuals who enroll in ESNY receive, at no charge, a minimum of 6 lessons, which are delivered on an individual basis--typically in the participant’s home--or in a group setting. Lessons are derived from one or more approved curricula and delivered using a research-based and thoroughly tested method of instruction. Standard lesson topics include general nutrition, safe food handling, preparation of quick, healthy and affordable meals and snacks, and food budget management; we also emphasize the importance of physical activity, especially for persons with limited resources and mobility. Additional lessons can be tailored to the interests and unique needs of our participants, and can include topics such as proper nutrition for pregnant/breastfeeding mothers, appropriate foods and feeding approaches for infants, pre-school and school -age children, and how to meet the special nutritional needs of seniors.
Special features and benefits of the program:
- Free to qualifying participants
- Flexible scheduling
- Convenient locations for one-on-one lessons, including home visits, or group lessons in residential facilities and other gathering places
- Nutritional analysis, each valued at $150, provided at the beginning and end of the lesson series
- Lessons customized to participant needs/wants
- Recipes for preparing inexpensive, quick, healthy and delicious meals provided and demonstrated
- Access to knowledgeable nutrition educators to answer any questions or concerns
- Prizes for participation given at the end of every lesson
